Author Event with Xu Xi (Horizon Hong Kong)

We are pleased to welcome Xu Xi (許素細), one of Hong Kong’s leading English-language writers, whose prose captures the transnational and transcultural pulse of her home city. She will be in conversation with KL-based filmmaker, writer, and theatre practitioner Matthew Tan to discuss her latest anthology, Horizon Hong Kong, at Lit Books @ CzipLee, Bangsar Village II from 4pm to 6pm.

Spanning from the 1960s to the present day across 22 stories, Horizon Hong Kong unfolds against decades of historic change—from Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 Polytechnic University protests. Through it all, Xu illuminates the private choices and resilient lives lived under the shadow of a legendary metropolis.

An Indonesian-Chinese-American from Hong Kong, Xu Xi is the author of sixteen books—spanning five novels, nine prose collections, a memoir, and a co-authored craft textbook—and the editor of four anthologies of Hong Kong literature. Her notable works include Monkey in Residence and Other Speculations (2022), This Fish is Fowl: Essays of Being (2019), and Dear Hong Kong: An Elegy for a City (2017). A former Jenks Chair in Contemporary Letters at the College of the Holy Cross, she has directed two international MFA programs and served as writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa, City University of Hong Kong, and Arizona State University. In an earlier chapter, she held executive posts at The Asian Wall Street Journal, Federal Express, and Pinkerton’s. A true global citizen, she currently splits her time between New York and the rest of the world.
