Every Step in the Right Direction

Curator and art historian Patrick Flores revisits the impulses, thought processes, and procedures that directed and shaped his work for the 2019 Singapore Biennale. Drawing inspiration from Salud Algabre’s oft-cited quote “No uprising fails. Each one is a step in the right direction,” Flores explores how contemporary artists in Asia have taken steps in responding to the social challenges of our times, and how acts of recovery and rediscovery open up possibilities for moving forward, both in the world of art and in the remaking of the world.
